Who Needs an Electrical Disconnect and Reconnect?

Any job that puts people, ladders or machinery near the live service line, or works on the wiring between the street and your meter, needs the supply cut first. A general electrician can switch off your main switch. They can’t touch the network side. These are the jobs we’re called for most.

~

Renovations and Extensions

Builders often need the service line moved or isolated while walls and rooflines change.

Roofing, Gutters and Painting

Trades working close to the overhead service line need it disconnected before they start.

Demolition and Knockdown Rebuilds

The supply has to be permanently removed before a house can be pulled down.

Tree Work Near Service Lines

Arborists cutting near the line to your house may need it taken down for the day.

What Is an Electrical Disconnect?

An electrical disconnect separates your property from the street supply. On an overhead service we usually do it at the point of attachment on your house or at the pole fuse. On an underground service it’s done at the pit or pillar.

A disconnect is different from turning off your main switch. The main switch only stops power at your switchboard. The service line and the meter side are still live, and that’s the part that can hurt a roofer or a builder.

Temporary Disconnection

A temporary disconnect is for work that finishes the same day or within a set period. We cut the supply, the work gets done and we reconnect. Most renovation, roofing, painting and tree jobs fall into this group.

Permanent Disconnection

A permanent disconnection, sometimes called an abolishment, is for a building that’s being demolished or a service that’s no longer needed. The supply is removed and the meter comes out. This is arranged through your electricity retailer and the network, and we can do the physical work on site once it’s approved.

What Is an Electricity Reconnection?

A reconnection puts your property back on the street supply after a disconnect. Before we reconnect, we check the service line, the point of attachment, the mains and the meter connections. If something’s been moved or replaced, it has to be tested and certified first.

Once the supply is back on, we test polarity and the connection at the switchboard, then lodge the paperwork with the network. You get a compliance certificate for the work.

A reconnection after a planned disconnect is different from getting power back after your retailer has cut it off. If your power was disconnected for an unpaid bill or because nobody was on the account, talk to your retailer. They arrange that one.

Jobs That Need the Power Disconnected

Here’s where we usually get involved:

If several trades are involved, tell us the whole plan. We can often line up one disconnection that covers the roofer, the builder and our own mains work.

Why Sydney Builders and Homeowners Choose Dave Fenech Electrical Services

We’ve been trading since 1999 and we’re accredited for Level 2 work on both Sydney networks. That means we can disconnect and reconnect the service ourselves, without waiting on another contractor.

Builders like that we fit around their program. If the roofer is booked for Tuesday, we plan the disconnection for Tuesday and come back when they’re done.

If we find a problem while the power’s off, like a rusted bracket or brittle mains, we’ll tell you before we reconnect. It’s often the cheapest time to fix it, because the supply’s already isolated.

Our Promise: We turn up when we say we will, keep you informed at every step, and leave your supply safe and working.

How Our Disconnect and Reconnect Process Works

Electrician disconnecting and reconnecting a home to the street power supply

Most jobs are simple once we know what the other trades need and when.

Step 1: Call us or book online. Tell us the address, the work being done and the dates you’re aiming for.
Step 2: We check the service and the site, then give you a fixed quote.
Step 3: We lodge the network paperwork and book the disconnection in with you.
Step 4: On the day, we isolate the service and confirm the site is safe for your trades.
Step 5: When the work’s finished, we reconnect, test the supply and issue a compliance certificate.

Book as far ahead as you can. Planned work can need notice to the network and to any neighbours who share the supply, and how long that takes depends on the network and the job.

How Much Does a Disconnect and Reconnect Cost?

A permanent disconnection before demolition costs $605 inc. GST. Other disconnect and reconnect jobs are quoted after a free site inspection, and standard network application fees are included.

These are the things that change the price:

  • Whether it’s a temporary disconnection or a permanent one before demolition
  • Overhead or underground supply, and where the disconnection point is
  • Single phase or three phase supply
  • How long the power needs to stay off, and whether we come back on a different day to reconnect
  • Access to the pole, point of attachment, pit or meter box
  • Whether the supply is shared with a neighbour, which can mean notifying them first
  • Any defects we find that need fixing before the supply can go back on

We look at the site and give you a fixed quote after inspection. Request a quote or call 02 9833 9566.

Electrical Disconnect and Reconnect FAQs

Who can disconnect and reconnect electricity in NSW?
Work on the service line and the network connection must be done by a Level 2 electrician working for an Accredited Service Provider, or by the network itself. A general electrician can work on your switchboard and wiring, but not on the supply from the street.

Do I need a disconnect for re-roofing?
Usually, yes, if the service line attaches to the roof or fascia or runs near where the roofers will be working. Roofers and their safety rules often require it. We disconnect the line before they start and reconnect when the roof is done.

How do I get electricity reconnected after a disconnection?
If we disconnected it for planned work, we reconnect it once the work is finished and the site is safe. If your power was cut by your retailer for an unpaid bill or a move, contact your retailer first. They arrange that reconnection with the network.

Can I turn my electricity back on myself after it’s been disconnected?
No. Never try to reconnect a service line or replace a removed fuse yourself. The supply side is live at full network voltage and can kill. Call a Level 2 electrician or your retailer.

How long will my power be off?
It depends on the job. For a roofing or painting job the power is usually off for the time the trades are near the line. We agree the disconnection and reconnection times with you before the day.

How far ahead do I need to book?
As early as you can. Planned work can need notice to the network and sometimes to neighbours who share the supply. Lead times depend on the network and the type of work, so tell us your dates when you first call.

What happens to the power supply before a demolition?
The supply must be permanently disconnected and the meter removed before the house comes down. This is requested through your retailer or through the network, such as Ausgrid. We can help with the request and do the site work as a Level 2 electrician. A permanent disconnection for demolition costs $605 inc. GST.

Is a power supply disconnection different from switching off the main switch?
Yes. The main switch only isolates your switchboard. The service line, the point of attachment and the meter side stay live. A disconnection removes the supply from the street, which is what trades working near the line need.

Can you disconnect three phase supply?
Yes. We disconnect and reconnect both single phase and three phase services. If you’re planning to change from one to the other, see our three phase upgrade page.

Can you do other electrical work while the power is disconnected?
Yes, and it often makes sense. Meter box moves, mains replacement, point of attachment repairs and switchboard upgrades can all be done while the supply is already off, so you only have one outage.

Do my neighbours lose power during a disconnection?
Usually not. Most homes have their own service line. Some older properties share a supply or a pole fuse, and in that case the neighbours may need notice. We check this when we look at the site.

Do you work for builders and commercial sites?
Yes. We work with builders, roofers, demolition contractors and property owners on homes, units and commercial buildings across Sydney.

Which parts of Sydney do you cover?
We cover all of Sydney from our base in St Marys, including Penrith, Blacktown, Mount Druitt, Parramatta, the Hills District, Liverpool, Bankstown, Campbelltown and the suburbs in between.
